Founded in 1996, Athena Research Consultants (ARC) is a certified Woman-Owned Small Business in southeastern Michigan. We specialize in historic preservation consulting and historical research, as well as public outreach and education about history and preservation through lectures, workshops, publications, and digital marketing for clients in the arts and humanities fields.
Over the years, we've had the pleasure of collaborating with partners, colleagues, and clients who share our deep enthusiasm for history. Whether it's uncovering the story of an old building, promoting the benefits of preservation, or sharing those deep connections to the past with the public, we're here to help with your preservation or history project.
We love diving into a good story, but unfortunately, these stories often get overlooked. People frequently ask, "What does it matter anymore?" or “Why does this interest you?” Documenting history is like holding a mirror to our past; it reflects our journey, our achievements, and our struggles. It gives context to our present and guidance for our future. By preserving these stories, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and provide a sense of continuity for future generations. That old building or artifact might have a story worth telling—one that could even become part of your own story. The historic people and places we think we know may have meaningful tales that could have an impactful affect on our future.
But there's more to history and preservation than telling stories. Historic preservation, in particular, is just as much about the future as it is about the past! Preserving a building means preserving the materials, workmanship, and labor that went into the original construction. When a building is rehabilitated and preserved, it keeps building materials out of landfills and conserves the building's embodied energy. Preservation helps reduce carbon footprints and is the right thing to do for our community and our planet.
All historic research and documentation contribute to preservation, and we're here to assist you every step of the way.
